2009 Joint Annual Convention

With the way the Philippines, especially Luzon, had been in the recent weeks when the storms, Ondoy and Pepeng, inundated the country, the Radiology community had a reason for optimism for holding the months before slated 2009 CT-MRISP Annual Convention pushed through as planned. It just goes to show that life goes on in the face of adversity and that surely, one cannot put a resolute venture down.

Slated on October 9-10, 2009 as the latter half of the Joint CT-MRISP and USP Annual Convention entitled Bracing for the Challenges; Bridging the Gaps in CT, MRI and Ultrasound , ” the event was opened by the society’s Board of Directors headed by the incumbent president, Dr. Primo Laforteza on the midday of October 9 in Diamond Hotel in Manila.

The day –and –a half curriculum of the scientific sessions prepared by the convention committee led by Dr. Cartrini Cruz, current vice president of the CTMRISP, was formally presented and given overview by Dr. Irma Kintanar, 2009 CTMRISP secretary, during the opening program.

This year’s conference was laden with topics comprised of brachial plexus, bone marrow and shoulder and knee joint subject matters lectured by Dr. Ravi Padmanabhan (Vincent’s Hospital,Melbourne, Australia) and Dr. Rafael Joson (SLMC); Pulmonary Imaging considerations tutored by Dr. Yasuo Nakajima (St. Marianna University Hospital, Japan) and Dr. Roy Vizcarra (SLMC); CT Urography given by Dr. Antonio Marlo Nievera (PGH/AHMC/MMC); CT Coronary Angiography shared by Dr. Harold Tan (TMC/PHC); and Post-operative Neck Imaging conveyed by Dr. Gil Maglalang (SLMC/UERRMMC).

Simultaneous teaching workshop regarding shoulder and knee was given and facilitated also by Dr. Padmanabhan. One of the highlights of this convention was the luncheon panel and interactive discussion which took place during the second day moderated by Dr. Ma. Lourdes Badion (MMC/LCP) and was sat-down by PCR luminaries such as Dr. Honorato Piedad (PHC), Dr. P. Henry Adapon (Cii-MMC), Dr. Arnold Tantoco (MMMC/UDMC) and Dr. Irma Kintanar (SLMC) who gave practical paradigms in making credible imaging conclusions during situations where limited or adequate clinical data were on hand.

The constant full attendance by radiologists and guests from the beginning till the last plenary session reflected the success of this year’s annual convention owing to hospitable and hardworking organizers, relevant and practical curriculum, venue ambiance, focused audience and good food.

Since attending conventions serves two functions –professional and social event- the organizers ensured that the participants will take part to the fun and excitement they looked forward to. Fellowship night cum induction ceremonies held at the Galaxias during the second night of the joint convention was actually a carry-over of the reunion of the radiologists vardenafil and friends happening from the time they set foot in the convention site. Humor and wit of the emcee, Dr. Eugene Dy, eased up and smoothen the flow of the affair that evening.

Nineteen new CT-MRISP fellows were inducted. Plaque of appreciation was awarded to the outgoing Chairman of the CT-MRISP Board of Examiners, Dr. Antonio Marlo Nievera; whilst salutation was extended to the new member of the board, Dr. Benigno Santi. High honors were granted to the truly meritorious “Teacher of the Year” awardee, Dr. Cesar Co. The radiology family likewise pay homage to one of the most prolific pillars of PCR, Dr. Alfonso Doria, with his son, another seasoned radiologist, Dr. Jose Alfonso Doria who graced the occasion and received the post-humous recognition.

Live band and stand-up comedians provided the entertainment throughout the night. Round-the clock raffles and freebies provided by the networks of supporters and industrial partners incited thrill to the delegates who join the occasion, visited the Technical Exhibition area and stayed during breaks in-between seminar proper.

Famous Manila Bay sunset send-off and embraced everyone as they depart the convention hall. Leaving with new knowledge and experience, the participants’ heartfelt thanks were a bonus to the organizing committee who were equally delighted for their presence. The soft radiance of the sundown was just setting the mood for the modest team who made the just concluded event possible – a simple toast for the conquest before a well-deserved rest.

2008 Joint Annual Convention

The 2008 joint annual convention of the CT-MRI Society of the Philippines   (CT-MRISP) and Ultrasound Society of the Philippines (USP) was held on October 9 to 11 at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila. The theme of the convention was “Expanding and Refining our Vision”. Distinguished foreign and local speakers were invited to share their respective fields of specialization.

On the first day of the joint annual convention, which was the CT-MRI Society of the Philippines annual convention, the president of the CT-MRISP Dr. Primo F. Laforeza delivered the welcome address followed by Dr. Ma. Cartrini O. Cruz, the convention chairman, who gave the opening remarks. Dr. Irma D. David-Kintanar, the scientific committee chair, introduces the course to the participants.

The series of lectures started with updates in Abdominal Imaging by Dr. Ana Maria M. Saulog. Her lecture was followed by Dr. Rakesh K. Mathur, a radiologist from New Delhi, who gave interesting lectures regarding pancreatic tumors and the different imaging patterns of small bowel diseases.

Dr. Roy P. Vizcarra and Dr. Raymund Augustus O. Conlu’s lectures on Virtual Bronshoscopy and Head and Neck Tumors utilizing CT-PET respectively, provided the participants an interesting overview of the advanced capabilities of the multidetector CT scan and PET-CT in diagnosing particular diseases.

Important points in emergency cardiovascular Chest CT were tackled by Dr. Manuel C. Mejia, Jr., Dr. Gil M. Maglalang, Jr. and Annie A. Rosario gave detailed and in-depth head and neck lectures (CT of Temporal bone and Paranasal sinuses) but at the same time were made easy to understand. An interesting lecture regarding pediatric imaging was delivered by Dr. Claro B. Ison who discussed cialis 20 mg important imaging techniques utilized as well as common abnormalities seen in children with seizure disorder.

Dr. Hong Sik Buyn, Director of Interventional Neuroradiology Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea discussed the importance and applications of CT and MR Angiography in Intracranial Atherosclerosis.

2007 Joint Annual Convention

The joint annual convention of the CT-MRI Society of the Philippines and the  Ultrasound Society of the Philippines was held last October 25 to 27 at the Manila Hotel Centennial Hall. The theme of this year’s joint annual convention was “Transcending Borders with Ultrasound, CT and MRI.”

The first one and a half days of the convention focused on CT and MRI. Dr. Lino Santiago S. Pabillo, the President of the Philippine College of Radiology, officially started the three day convention with his opening remarks. This was then followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr. Manuel C. Mejia, the President of the CT-MRI Society of the Philippines.

An overview of the scientific program was handled by Dr. Ma. Cartrini O. Cruz, the CT-MRISP Convention Chair. There were two distinguished foreign speakers that were invited to lecture: Dr. Gan Yu Unn from Singapore gave a very interesting lecture on post-surgical MDCT evaluation of Cardiovascular Disease and another talk on imaging findings of Pulmonary thromboembolism.

Dr. Seung-Koo Lee from South Korea delivered two talks focusing on advancements in Brain Imaging, particularly Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Perfusion weighted Imaging. Aside from the foreign speakers, distinguished radiologists from the Philippines also gave very interesting lectures on different topics. Dr. Irma David-Kintanar gave a thorough discussion on CSF Flow studies while Dr. Claro B. Ison, Jr. presented topics on neuroimaging pathologies.

Certain aspects of Musculoskeletal and Abdominal imaging on CT and MRI were also tackled by Drs. Rafael S. Joson and Manuel C. Mejia, Jr., respectively. Dr. Joson delivered a lecture on Glenohumeral Joint Instability.

2002 CT-MRISP Annual Convention

The 5th Annual Convention of the CT-MRI Society of the Philippines was held last October 12-13, 2002 at the CME Auditorium at the Medicine Building of the University of Santo Tomas. Aside from being an annual membership meeting of the CT-MRI Society of the Philippines, the convention featured scientific sessions designed to help radiologist and clinicians evaluate the imaging features, radiologic staging as well as a post therapeutic assessment of the cancers of the different systems.

Dr. Rafael Joson started Day one of the scientific sessions with an interesting discussion of “Advanced Imaging in Brain Tumors”. He was followed up by Dr. Jonas Francisco Santiago with his Informative “Positron Emission Tomography” Dr. Vincent F.H. Chong the Society’s invited discussant from Singapore, delivered his lecture on “Cervical Nodes: What Radiologists Should Know”, “Head and Neck: Post Theraoeutic Complications” and Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: Imaging Issues” which were remarkable for their simplicity and clarity.

The seconda Day saw Dr. Ramon Santos-Ocampo talking on “Bronchogenic Carcinoma” while “Hepatocellular Carcinoma was presented by Dr, Pedro Danilo Lagamayo. After a short coffee break, Dr. Rosanna Fragante tackled “Urinary Tract Neoplasm” , Dr. Manuel Mejia Jr. closed the lecture series with this presentation of “Pelvic (Gynecologic) Tumors”. Dr. Jocelyn Cuyos and Dr. Ann Margaret Salamat served as moderators.

It was a well attended affair, thanks to the efforts of this year’s organizing committee composed of Dr. Ruben Carreon, Dr. Benigno Santi II, Dr. Ann Margaret Salamat, Dr. Francis Villanueva, Dr. Ronald Cervantes, Dr. Arnaldo Tantoco and Dr. Ma. Cartrini Cruz. Dr. Manuel Mejia Jr. and Dr. Cecilia Villamor served as advisers to the committee.
